The Original Portable Outhouse from Reworkshop, what we consider the most environmentally friendly toilet unit on the market.

Our Outhouses can be fitted with a composting, long drop or flushing toilet even a urinal, theres more details below, and you simply select which you require at purchase.

Design, build and portability

We wanted our Outhouse to be simple to use, portable, strong and environmentally friendly. The design harks back to the traditional outback or frontier outhouses and privy’s, this was something I was keen to keep the look and feel of by choosing the correct materials that would also fit with our sustainability brief.

To be sold nationwide or even across the world it needed to fit on a standard pallet and also be easily maneuverable once on site. To use a smaller euro style pallet seemed like the logical answer with a little adjusting and strengthening these make the perfect reclaimed base for our Outhouse.

The walls and roof structure, and the cladding are pressure treated FSC timber sourced from sustainably managed forests, this choice was made to ensure strength and reliable production. All our frames are screwed by hand for strength and accuracy, not nailed for speed.

The door is made from treated tongue and groove shiplap, screwed and braced together. They are hung with strong UK made T-hinges and feature a reclaimed hardwood handle and locks inside and out.

The Original Outhouse comes with our take on the tradtional moon & star cut out on the door to allow light in. you can choose to not have this or send us your own design.

The roof on the Original Outhouse is constructed from FSC timber with a reclaimed pallet wood deck and heavy duty felt covering.

Eco friendly and sustainable

I’m sure by the time you’ve read to this point you will understand how passionate we are about the environment and the use of sustainable and reclaimed materials. You won’t find any ply wood or manufactured wooden board here!

Reworkshop are constantly striving to ensure all the materials, fixings, adhesives and coatings we use are as environmentally friendly as possible while still being fit for purpose. We genuinely feel our Outhouses are the greenest toilet units on the market.

Which toilet will you have in your Original Outhouse?

Composting toilet 27 litre

Our original design and still our most popular choice, the 27 litre flexi tub is easy to empty and gives enough capacity for a couple of days.

To empty you simply lift the toilet box lid and remove the flexi tub from inside the Outhouse.

The toilet box is constructed of FSC timber and clad with reclaimed wood, the lid is thick solid pine and treated with a wax oil. The Original comes with an solid pine toilet seat.

The separator is adjustable and urine is piped out of the rear of the unit. We also supply a soak away vent to prevent smells coming back up the separator.

Composting toilet 75 litre

If your after more capacity from your composting toilet this is the unit for you. This new design has a recycled plastic drawer at the rear which slides open making changing the container even easier. It comes as standard with a 75 litre flexi tub but has room for taller containers if needed.

The toilet box on the 75 litre version is the same as the 26 litre, which means you still have access to the container and the separator from inside the Outhouse for inspection.

Long Drop

The traditional long drop or pit latrine for all intents and purposes this looks exactly the same as our composting toilets but there is no collection or separation these toilets are simply positioned over a hole in the ground, inside the toilet box is a recycled plastic lined chute which protects the timber and is easy to clean.

Flushing toilet

If you have a sewer or septic tank conenection availible, you can of course have a flushing toilet installed in your Outhouse, these will come with all the interior connections already made for waste and clean water, with just the exterior connections needing to be made once on site.

Urinal

Often over looked, but a urinal can be a very important toilet on a site, they take a lot of pressure off normal toilets, reduce queues and help prevent miss-use of composting toilets by male users.

Our Urinal Outhouses don’t require a water connection they simply need the waste pipe connecting to a soak away or drainage. The interior, walls and floor are partially lined with a recycled plastic protecting the timber and making cleaning easy.
